A senior Iranian lawmaker says the country's legislative body favors any initiatives to help strengthen bilateral relations between Australia and the Islamic Republic.
“Majlis welcomes any measure to strengthen Iran-Australia relations,” Kazem Jalali, the spokesman for Iran's Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Wednesday, ICANA reported.
Jalili, in his meeting with First Assistant Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs David Stuart, highlighted the significance of boosting economic, political and cultural cooperation between Tehran and Canberra.
Jalili also pointed to the recent developments in the region, describing them as “deep and serious developments.”
The Iranian lawmaker condemned the discriminatory approach by the US and other Western powers towards other countries.
“The people in the region take notice of the West's double standards toward oppressed nations and this will cause them to hate Western countries, the United States in particular,” he said.
Jalali also criticized Australia for some of its policies regarding the developments in the region and Afghanistan.
“Australia as one of the world's powerful countries should not follow US policies, but should adopt an independent and logical approach and move to protect its own interests,” he urged.
The visiting Australian official also noted the various fields for the two countries to expand bilateral cooperation and highlighted the position of Iran in the region as an ancient civilization that plays an active role in regional interactions.
Stuart called for more talks between Iran and Australia through political and parliamentary delegations as a means of developing mutual understanding between two countries, and accelerating the process of expanding bilateral cooperation.
