'US unable to stop Islamic awakening'

A top Iranian military commander has lashed out at Saudi Arabia for its violent military offensive against civilians in Bahrain, stressing that the US is unable to stop Islamic awakening in the region.

“Weapons of the United States, Britain and the Zionist regime (Israel) cannot destroy the Islamic awakening,” IRNA quoted Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi as saying on Monday.

He pointed to the military presence of certain Arab states in Bahrain and added that countries, which have dispatched their forces to Bahrain, have “made a mistake.”

“Saudi Arabia has made the biggest mistake. Although Riyadh has its own motivations, its military intervention in Bahrain is at US request,” the commander emphasized.

He warned that the Saudi invasion of Bahrain and the killings of the Bahraini people would “trigger the fall of the dictatorial regime in Bahrain.”

He went on to say that nations would stand against despotism, dictatorship, bullying, violation of rights and opposition to the Qur'an and expressed hope that Muslims across the world would achieve victory against the US and its allies.

Led by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain's Arab neighbors deployed their troops to the country in mid-March to reinforce the armed attacks against protesters. The reinforcements have contributed to an increase in the use of violence against protesters.

According to the state-funded BBC, the harsh crackdown has so far left over 30 people dead.

Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have condemned the Bahraini and Saudi regimes for the heavy-handed tactics against civilians in the Persian Gulf state.
