Iran to produce anti-aircraft missiles

ranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi says the country will produce particular types of anti-aircraft missiles, emphasizing that Tehran will soon announce good news on its defensive capabilities.

Iranian experts are currently working on the production of certain anti-aircraft missiles that will become operational in the near future, IRNA quoted Vahidi as saying on Monday.

He lashed out at countries which claim that the military progress made by the Islamic Republic poses a threat to the region, reiterating that Iran's military capabilities are merely aimed at defending the country.

The Iranian minister criticized powers that seek to impose a high volume of arms sales on regional countries, saying, “Those who have imposed massive arms purchases on regional states cannot claim that Iran's defense budget of 2-3 billion dollars will pose a threat to the region.”

On Sunday, Vahidi announced that Iran would build a domestically developed and produced national air defense missile system, saying, “Building this missile [system] is time-consuming but solid steps have been taken in terms of manufacturing it.”

On May 1, Deputy Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Air Force (IRIAF) for Operations General Mohammad Alavi said the country has managed to produce domestically-manufactured smart weaponry, including new cruise missiles which have the capability to destroy naval targets.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

On April 16, Iran announced that it has successfully test-fired an air-defense missile system dubbed Sayyad (Hunter)-2.

The newly-tested system is an upgraded version of the Sayyad-1 system with higher precision, range and defensive power.

In January, Iran successfully test-fired the mid-range, surface-to-air Hawk missile and the Iranian Defense Ministry delivered new cruise missile systems to the Navy.

The systems, designed and manufactured by Iranian experts, are capable of spotting and destroying various targets at sea.

Iran has repeatedly stated that its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is only based on deterrence.
