S Korea launches security task force ahead of World Championships

SEOUL, July 8 (Xinhua) -- South Korea held on Friday a launching ceremony of a security task force responsible for ensuring safety during the World Championships to be held next month in Daegu.

About 1,000 government officials, including Daegu Mayor Kim Bum-il, and relevant personnel attended the ceremony that took place at the Daegu Stadium in the southeastern city.

The security task force composed of about 540 members will be in charge of traffic management, security of stadium and facilities and safety of crowd and athletes during the upcoming international sporting event.

After the launching ceremony, police conducted counter- terrorism training against explosives and other chemical attacks. "After today's launching ceremony, we are planning to operate security forces for every facility and will secure the perfect safety for the event by analyzing and supplementing defects of all facilities," said Ha Won-ho from the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency.

The World Championships will start on August 27 and run until September 4.
