Facebook helps reunite man with family after 11 years

PUNE: Social networking site Facebook has helped the Pune rural police's newly opened cyber crime cell to trace a youth who had gone missing about 11 years ago.

The youth, identified as Manohar Vyankatrao Nemanivar, a native of Mauje Kinvat in Nanded district, had gone missing on December 28, 2000. He was 22 years old at the time, when he left home without informing his parents. His parents had registered a missing person's complaint at the Kinvat police station on January 2, 2001.

Manohar's parents, relatives, friends and the police had made numerous attempts to trace him across the country, but had failed. The parents had even announced a cash prize and appealed to the public for information about their son, but did not receive any response.

On June 25, 2011, sub-inspector Vikas Kumbhar of the cyber crime cell of the Pune rural police' s crime branch received information from a friend, Sham Poshetty of Nanded, that Manohar had opened a Facebook account under the name "Manoj Rao".

Poshetty, who is a senior official at the Beed Municipal Corporation, also told Kumbhar that Manohar had left a message for an old friend on Facebook and appeared to be residing in the Pune district.

Kumbhar then studied the details of Manohar's Facebook account. The cyber crime cell team contacted the persons in Manohar's friend list and gathered more information about him.

On July 5, the police traced Manohar at Shirdi and brought him to Pune.

Speaking to TOI, Kumbhar said, "When Manohar's parents were informed that their son had been traced, their happiness knew no bounds. The parents and their family members arrived at the Pune rural police office in four vehicles and we handed him over to them. The family members had lost hope of meeting Manohar, an only son, as he hadn't contacted them in 11 years."

Kumbhar said, "Manohar is now about 33 years old. He did not tell us why he left home. We also did not force him to tell the reason behind leaving home as he was meeting his family after a very long time."

Investigations have revealed that Manohar was working at a hotel in Goa for eight years. His family owns a hotel in Nanded.

"On seeing his parents, Manohar broke into tears and touched their feet. He apologised for leaving home and promised them that he would never leave them again," Kumbhar added.

Manohar's cousin Krishna Nemanivar told TOI from Nanded, "The entire family is overjoyed with Manohar's return. Ever since he has come home, relatives and friends have thronged our house to meet him."

On why Manohar left home 11 years ago, Krishna said, "We are very happy that he is back. We do not want to bother him by asking him why he left. It is up to him to tell us what had occurred then." He added that Manohar would now look after the family's hotel and farms at Kinvat village.

Manohar's parents thanked the police team headed by inspector Balraj Lanjile, sub-inspector Vikas Kumbhar, constables Rahul Kirve, Atul Dere and Mayur Wadkar that traced their son.
