Los Angeles (CNN) -- The U.S. military's black ops mission resulting in Osama bin Laden's death this month will be the subject of a movie by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who both worked on best picture-winning "The Hurt Locker," Columbia Pictures said Wednesday.
The film production company announced it acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the motion picture.
Bigelow and Boal have been developing an untitled film about the U.S. military's mission to capture or kill bin Laden since 2008, and a U.S. Navy SEAL team's successful search and killing of the al Qaeda leader in Pakistan this month made the project "more relevant," said Amy Pascal, co-chairwoman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, based in Culver City, California.
The movie is scheduled to begin production late this summer and will be released in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2012, Pascal said. Boal and Bigelow will produce the film, along with Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison and executive producer Greg Shapiro, she said.
"With the death of Osama bin Laden, this film could not be more relevant," Pascal said in a statement. "Kathryn and Mark have an outstanding perspective on the team that was hunting the most wanted man in the world. Mark is second to none as an investigative journalist, and Kathryn will bring the same kind of compelling authenticity and urgency that distinguished 'The Hurt Locker' and made that film so memorable and special."
