Street View: Google's legal team meets K'taka govt

BANGALORE: Google's legal expert, Geetanjali Duggal and Venkatesh Hariharan, head of public policy and government affairs, Google met with a few BJP leaders in Bangalore where the company launched its controversial Street View feature in May this year.

It was a closed door meeting led by Ashwath Narayan, a member of legislative council to negotiate on the Street View feature which the party had opposed to earlier. "We are reviewing the objections and we have also started a dialogue with the central govt," said Hariharan.

The party has a few other demands from Google. For instance, on Google maps, parts of Arunachal Pradesh as disputed territory, the party wants it to be included as a part of India. "We have to look into it. Google generally follows an international accepted practice when it comes to disputed terrotories," said Duggal.

The party does not want the Street View cars to picture some places like VIP residences etc. as it can be a mapping tool for terrorists. "We are concerned about terrorists making use of this especially in the wake of the recent Mumbai blasts," said Narayan.

The party asked Google to seek permission from the Central government for the project and then come back to the State government to continue the Street View project. The Street View project has been a controversial one globally for the company. Just three weeks after it was rolled out in Bangalore, the company received a letter from the Commissioner of Police of Bangalore asking it to stop the cars.
