At least four people have been reportedly killed in an attack on a police station in the troubled northwestern Chinese region of Xinjiang.
According to the official Xinhua news agency, the dead include one police officer, a security worker and two other people.
The sources at the Ministry of Public Security say police have shot and killed some of the attackers in the city of Hotan. At least 13 people have reportedly been detained by the police as well.
The World Uighur Congress -- an organization for the exiled Muslim minority -- says the clashes erupted after police refused a request by a group of them for a gathering.
The German-based international organization says women and children are among the group.
The Uighur minority are unhappy with what they say is Beijing's repression and unwanted Han immigration.
The worst came in July 2009 when clashes between the Uighur and the Han Chinese in Urumqi left at least 197 people dead and injured one thousand more.
The unrest -- the deadliest of its kind to hit China in decades -- had prompted authorities to take some 1,430 people into custody.
