Musharraf assets frozen in Bhutto case

A Pakistani court orders the confiscation of Pervez Musharraf's assets after he failed to appear before the court hearing Benazir Bhutto's assassination case, Press TV reported.

On Saturday, Judge Shahid Rafique issued the order to freeze all Musharraf's bank accounts and his property to be seized.

"The court today ordered the confiscation of Pervez Musharraf's property and the freezing of his bank accounts in Pakistan," public prosecutor Chaudhry Azhar confirmed.

Rawalpindi's Anti-Terrorism Court has charged Musharraf with providing Pakistani militants with an opportunity to attack Bhutto. He has also been accused of having prior knowledge of the assassination plot and not acting to prevent her death. .

Bhutto was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack in December 2007 as she was leaving an election rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

A gunman reportedly shot her in the neck and set off a bomb. At least 20 other people died in the attack and several more were injured.

Her assassination threw Pakistan into a crisis and left questions unresolved for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and many of her supporters. The PPP, led by Asif Ali Zardari, rode a wave of sympathy to win a February 2008 election.

Zardari, who won the presidency after Bhutto's death, has pointed the finger of blame at the then government of Musharraf and threatened to take action against the former military ruler.

The 67-year-old former president has been living in Britain and the US since he stepped down amid protests and following impeachment threats in 2008.

As the army chief, Musharraf ousted civilian Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 1999 coup and became president in 2001. He resigned from his post seven years later.
