Italy's largest trade union has called for a one-day strike to protest against planned austerity measures amid widespread criticisms of the government's spending cuts.
On Tuesday, Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), the country's largest trade union announced that the strike will be held on September 6, AFP reported.
The trade union has described the government's move as unfair and wrong, saying the spending cuts would burden the working class but will not stimulate growth.
Yet, Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi insists the measures will calm the financial markets and convince Europe's Central Bank (ECB) that Italy has been making efforts to reduce its burgeoning debt.
The austerity package, which ordinary citizens as well as many politicians disapprove of, is aimed at cutting over 45 billion Euros to balance the country's budget by 2013.
An Italian senate committee has already started examining the cuts despite opposition from politicians and government employees.
The package will be passed to the senate for an open debate in two weeks before moving to the chamber of deputies.
